Forgotten Realms: Menzoberranzan 10/28/94 Read me file: ******** SPECIAL NOTE FOR SMARTDRV AND OTHER DISK CACHE USERS ***** SMARTDRV: SMARTDRV will not work properly with Forgotten Realms: Menzoberranzan in its normal configuration. You Can: 1) Remove SMARTDRV (you can do this by creating a boot disk) 2) Remove SMARTDRV's write cache by typing SMARTDRV followed by the hard drive letter. Example: SMARTDRV C (Enter) This will remove the write cache on your C: drive. If you have more than one hard drive, repeat this command for each drive. So, if you have a C: and a D:, you would type: SMARTDRV C (Enter) SMARTDRV D (Enter) OTHER DISK CACHE PROGRAMS: Any program that has a write cache enabled is prone to data loss. Please remove the write cache or remove the disk cache program from your configuration (you can do this by creating a boot disk). If you do not take the above precautions, you may exibit data loss!!! ********************************************************************* MANTLE CAVERNS: The two mantle caverns shown on the map on page 27 of the rule book are in the wrong order. Mantle Cavern One should be in the northeast while Mantle Cavern Two should be in the northwest. ********************************************************************* POTIONS: Drink a Potion: To have a character drink a potion on the Adventure Screen, left-click on the in-hand potion. To have a character drink a potion on the Character Sheet, move the potion over the head of the mannequin figure and left-click to have the character drink the potion. Potion of Jump: When a character drinks a potion of jump, the ability "jump" is added to the character's abilities. To use the "jump" ability, left-click on a mage's golden spell book, a cleric's holy symbol, or a character's ability ribbon. To display the "jump" ability, left-click on the A which appears to the left of the 1st-level spell button. To activated the ability, left-click on the name of the ability. ********************************************************************* SPELLS: If the party is half-way through a webbed door when the spell "passweb" wears off, the party can still step forward and out of the web in Step Movement. To enter Step Movement, move the cursor over the compass located above the movement arrows and left-click. Once in Step Movement, move the party forward one square and out of the web. ********************************************************************* CHARACTER GENERATION: Character generation takes place in the chapel of House Baenre, where an altar is surrounded by eight burning braziers. One brazier at a time, the process of creating your characters begins. After each Player Character characteristic is chosen, the view circles around the scene to the next brazier. Select Sex: In the first brazier, two figures appear, one representing a male character and one representing a female character. Left-click on the appropriate figure to choose the sex of your character. Your selection is displayed near the bottom of the screen. Select Race: The scene circles to the next brazier and a candle melts to reveal six race icons. The choices are: human, gnome, dwarf, elf, half-elf, and halfling. Left-click on the appropriate icon to choose the race of your character. Your selection is displayed near the bottom of the screen. Select Alignment: In this brazier a tower representing the various alignments appears. Left-clicking over the choices displayed near the top and bottom of the tower causes the tower to rotate, displaying a new choice. The choices are: lawful good, lawful neutral, chaotic good, chaotic neutral, neutral good, and true neutral. Your choice may be limited by certain class restrictions. Your selection is displayed near the bottom of the screen. When the selections at the top and bottom of the tower show the desired alignment, move the cursor to the bottom center of the screen over the word SELECT. Left-click over SELECT to choose the alignment shown in the brazier. Your selection is displayed near the bottom of the screen. Select Face: In the next brazier, several of the portraits available to your character are displayed, along with the selection MORE at the top of the screen. Left-clicking on MORE displays more available portraits. Left-click on the appropriate portrait to choose the face of your character. Your selection is displayed near the bottom of the screen. Select Hit Points and Attributes: In the next brazier, the character's Hit Points appear, along with the various character attributes. Reroll: This choice randomly generates a new set of numbers for both Hit Points and Attributes. [Shift to MIN/MAX]: By pressing and holding the Shift key, then left-clicking over either your character's Hit Points number or the appropriate Attributes dice, the number of your choice automatically goes to its maximum possible value. By pressing and holding the Shift key, then right-clicking over either your character's Hit Points number or the appropriate Attributes dice, the number of your choice automatically goes to its minimum possible value. Attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. To the right of each attribute three dice appear. By left-clicking over these dice the numerical value of the chosen attribute is adjusted upward. Should you wish to reduce a particular attribute number, see the instructions for [Shift to MIN/MAX] above. To choose the Hit Points and Attributes numbers appearing on the screen. left-click over the word SELECT centered near the bottom of the screen. Name: A tombstone appears upon which your character's name can be typed. Names may be up to twelve characters in length. Hit the Return-key when you have completed typing your character's name. If, when you press the Return-key, the character generator does not continue, you have either typed in an empty name or a name of one of the characters you will meet during your adventure. Please re-type a new name for your character. Keep or Delete: At this point all the pertinent information about the character is known. Left-clicking on the word KEEP saves the character information generated and you are automatically returned to the first brazier to begin the process over again, this time in order to generate the second character necessary to start the game. Selecting DELETE returns you to the first stage to begin the generation again. Using the Escape Key: During the character generation process, pressing the Escape-key returns you to the character generation step previous to the one currently displayed. For example, pressing the Escape-key while choosing character Alignment returns you to the beginning of the sequence for selecting the character's Class. Pressing the Escape-key during the cinematic leading to a selection step will take you to the selection step.
